The MAP Experience
The MAP Experience includes administering a single maturity profile for each individual followed by a debrief with a certified coach. The MAP experience involves gaining deeper-level insights applicable over a much longer period than most other assessments used today. The MAP Experience includes administering a single MAP for each individual followed by a debrief of the profile with a certified coach. The MAP takes about 45-60 minutes to complete, and the debrief one hour. The debrief conversation can either be in person or virtual (telephone or video meeting). The client can request a confidential recording of the session. This is a valuable record to have because the debrief content can continue to be relevant for 2-3 years or longer. Research and observation have shown that people navigate through the stages in many different ways. Our coaches are experts at guiding leaders on their very individual paths. Sometimes, for example, a coach might determine that a client would benefit from becoming more settled within the current stage and/or that the client needs extra support to transition between stages.
The MAP Journey
The MAP Journey includes the MAP Experience
plus a package of follow-up coaching
sessions that support clients making
developmental shifts. Coaching focuses on
implementing the recommendations in the
MAP report, as well as generating new
insights through the coaching process.
The MAP Journey
The MAP Journey
The MAP Journey includes the MAP Experience plus a package of follow-up coaching sessions that support clients in making developmental shifts. The MAP provides an evidence-based psychometric evaluation that is less prone to interpreter bias than other types of developmental coaching. The coaching focuses on implementing recommendations in the MAP report, as well as generating new insights through the coaching process. Tailored coaching provides exponential benefits for longer-term stage transformation, not just horizontal adaptation. It enables individuals to comprehend and respond to leadership challenges in more complex, effective, and wiser ways. They can now see new opportunities and possibilities for who they can be. Overall, vertical development expands leaders’ inner and outer resources, enabling greater effectiveness and impact.
D-ROI: Developmental Return on Investment
The MAP D-ROI process includes taking
the MAP before and after a structured
learning program. The D-ROI report provides
details about the particular ways
leaders have matured as a result of learning
efforts. This service can be implemented
both for individual leader development
and for organizational-wide initiatives.

The D-ROI report provides details about the particular ways leaders have matured as a result of learning efforts. This service can be implemented both for individual leader development and for organizational wide initiatives.
For Individuals:
Individuals take the “Pre-MAP” at the beginning of a learning process. It could be at the start of a coaching engagement or before participating in a training experience that includes one or more workshops. After completing some or all phases of the learning initiative, clients take the “Post-MAP.” For consistency, we ensure that the same certified scorer rates both the Pre- and Post-MAPs. The debrief for the Post-MAP includes an analysis of the quantitative and qualitative shifts, and identifies further areas of focus that will be most supportive of the client’s growth.
For Organizations:
The D-ROI can demonstrate benefits for organizations that implement either an enterprise-wide leadership development program or offer a specific program for a target audience. Specific programs may target, for example, high-potential leaders, executive team development, emerging leaders, or succession candidates, amongst others. The D-ROI Report documents developmental results gained at both the individual and collective level. To request any of the MAP services described above, please contact map@verticaldevelopment.com

Vertical Development for Leaders
VeDA offers a two-and-a-half day public
workshop for leaders (for participants
who have previously taken the MAP and
received a debrief). Participants from different
organizations learn about vertical
development and how to apply the framework
in their own contexts and culture.
Vertical Development for Leaders
What is Vertical Development?
VeDA offers a two-and-a-half day public workshop for leaders. Each leader takes the MAP and receives a debrief before attending the workshop. Participants from different organizations learn about vertical development and how to apply the framework in their own contexts and culture. In this workshop, we present an overview of the Leadership Maturity Framework. Stage-related aspects are learned through a variety of exercises and reflections. Participants have conversations about their maturity profiles with peer learners, and discover different ways they can support themselves and each other. Stage-related dilemmas are discussed in peer coaching pairs. Participants work in small groups on their personal and professional challenges with others who share a similar world view. They also gain different perspectives from others who operate from a different “center of gravity.” Everyone walks away with an appreciation of different tools and practices and their value at different stages. The workshop also provides an overview of how to apply the understanding of vertical development to their home contexts. Case studies of MAP implementation in other organizations are discussed. A demonstration of coaching a leader based on their MAP creates an opportunity for rich conversations about how to tailor language and generate clarity about what lies ahead. This program is open to leaders at all levels, and will be particularly valuable for those who design learning for leaders in large organizations.
The Integrated Leader Series
VeDA’s Integrated Leader series
introduces participants to the Polarity

the dynamics of how they work, and how
to use the polarity map template to
manage polarities in day-to-day personal
and professional challenges.
The Integrated Leader Series
The Integrated Leader Series
VeDA’s Integrated Leader series introduces participants to the Polarity Thinking toolkit. Level 1 workshop of the series focuses on understanding polarities, the dynamics of how they work, and how to use the polarity map template to manage polarities in day-to-day personal and professional challenges.
This workshop is for leaders, consultants, and coaches, or anyone facilitating development of leaders, teams, and organizations—for people who want to find a better way to think about and work with challenging issues and dilemmas. By moving beyond “either/or” thinking, typically used to solve most problems, and including “both/and” thinking, participants increase their ability to deal with complex, interdependent issues. They learn how to interpret recurrent tensions in polarity terms, and enhance their capacity to move through changes more efficiently. Participants will take away a highly practical tool-kit that can be used immediately at their desk, with their team, and in their organization—enabling both higher performance and greater self-awareness. The workshop will also address how polarity thinking facilitates vertical development. We will additionally examine the value of using the polarity lens to appreciate and facilitate the emergence of a more integral culture.
Polarity thinking is used successfully and with great benefit in many organizations, including: Hewlett Packard, Linksys, Sprint, Intel, Proctor and Gamble, PepsiCo, United Nations, Lockheed Martin, Amoco, Cleveland Clinic, Hershey’s, General Motors, General Electric, Marriott Hotels, Kaiser Permanente, Bristol-Myers Squibb, US Navy, US Office of Personnel Management, US Federal Executive Institute, Charles Schwab and Co, TJ Maxx, Notre Dame University, Kraft, McKinsey, DBM Consulting, Arthur Andersen Consulting, Center for Creative Leadership, Google, and Capital One.

Experiential Workshops for Leaders and Coaches
Helping you cultivate and facilitate vertical development
Our Developing Leadership Maturity (DLM) intensive workshops are designed for leaders, coaches, and other professionals who want to deepen their knowledge of the stages of adult development and how to use the MAP instrument for measuring development. DLM also offers an opportunity for professional coaches who wish to expand their portfolio and be certified in coaching for vertical development.
Participants in the DLM intensives will benefit from a rich fusion of personal and professional development and deeper self-awareness, as well as gain new insights from vertical development theory and research. In this program, you will experience a deep dive into the Leadership Maturity Framework (LMF) and its measurement instrument, the Maturity Profile (MAP). You will learn how to apply the LMF and the MAP to enable integrative, transformative growth in yourself, other leaders and teams, and organizations.
Beena Sharma and Dr. Susanne Cook-Greuter will be your expert facilitators as you learn about mapping adult development.
Our Developing Leadership Maturity program includes the following components:
a. DLM Intensive 1: Understanding and Measuring Stages of Development (online)
This web-based intensive covers the basics of vertical developmental theory and offers a detailed understanding of the stages of adult development as revealed in the LMF. We will look at how the LMF and the MAP can be applied both explicitly and implicitly for individual, team, and organizational development. This intensive also includes a pre-workshop tutorial on Polarity Thinking.
b. DLM Intensive 2: Practicing Leadership Maturity Coaching (onsite)
In this in-person workshop, you will get in-depth training and practice in Leadership Maturity Coaching (LMC). You will practice stage-indicator “detection” skills by exploring MAP protocols from different developmental levels. You will learn the MAP debrief process, and develop coaching skills for giving effective and sensitive feedback to clients, using the MAP results and the underlying eight-stage leadership maturity framework.
c. LMC Certification Process
If you are a coach or a leader with coaching experience, and would like to get certified in VeDA’s Leadership Maturity Coaching, here are the steps:
Steps to Coach Certification
Step 1: Complete Intensive I
Step 2: Complete Intensive II
Step 3: Leadership Maturity Coaching Supervision
Supervised practice in how to administer the MAP, debrief MAP results, and deliver ongoing developmentally tailored coaching
Step 4: Case Study / Personal Learning Summary / Certification
Description of a maturity coaching case study and a personal learning narrative describing insights gained. Final certification interview
Note: The LMF certificate is a coaching specialization and, by itself, does not qualify someone to be a coach without prior basic coach training. To get certified as a VeDA LMC coach, you must already possess certification from the ICF, a certificate from a well-regarded coaching school, or can demonstrate prior long-term, successful practice as a coach.
Vertical Development Coaching—Basics
Designed for anyone interested in
developing others, this three-day
workshop teaches the fundamentals
of vertical development. You
will learn how to tailor your approach
to different stages of development
and offer more nuanced
support.
Vertical Development Coaching—Basics
Vertical Development Coaching—Basics
This three-day in-person workshop is for individuals who work with other individuals—coaches, leader-mentors, psychotherapists, psychologists, counseling psychologists, and others in the helping professions. Participants will learn about the fundamentals of adult vertical development, and how to tailor communication and support to different stages of development.
This program focuses on comprehending and appreciating each stage of development, its capacities and limitations, and what is most relevant and actionable by individuals at different stages. The MAP itself is not the focus here, even though a brief orientation of the MAP instrument and how it measures development will be provided. Taking the MAP before or after this program is optional for workshop participants. You will learn the core “developmental tasks” that need to be mastered or surmounted at each stage in order to transition to the next. You will leave with a practical guide to use in consultation with your clients, so they can determine what might be next in their development, and address what might be in their way.
By participating in this workshop, you will have the opportunity to retain your “main” approach (whether a specific coaching practice, such as NLP, or a particular kind of therapy, such as CBT), while integrating the lens of vertical development in order to enhance your current approach. You will be part of a growing group of professionals learning how stage development insights can be used to amplify and enhance the work you already do. As you continue to work with your clients, you will notice more subtleties as your clients make new meaning through your guidance. You will also become more aware of your own stage-related transformations and shifts in perspectives as you grow through your work with others.

‘Coaching-the-Coach’ Service
‘Coaching-the-Coach’ Service
Would you like to learn about maturity coaching through your own personal experience of working with Dr. Cook-Greuter or Beena Sharma? When, as a coach, you invest in developing your own maturity, you amplify the impact of your coaching as well. This service is for you if you are an experienced coach interested in being coached yourself using your MAP results. You will learn to use your self as instrument, which is itself a later-stage capacity.
This service is also available for coaches who are current or past participants in VeDA’s Developing Leadership Maturity program. During the process of certification, or after completing certification, coaches may request this service to hone their skills. You will gain greater discernment about vertical development as you discover your own developmental shifts. You can also benefit from bringing your clients’ MAPs or situations as cases to discuss during your personal coaching sessions.
ORGANIZATIONAL CONSULTING SERVICES
VeDA’s network of consultants and coaches brings deep expertise in partnering with clients to integrate a vertical development approach into their strategic initiatives and organizational culture. We offer recommendations that require engaging with other service providers, such as the Leadership Circle 360 or Holacracy. However, these other services are introduced to our clients always with the added value of our vertical development perspective. In other words, we present other services using the lens of stage development and suggest ways to adapt them for a better fit and better outcomes. For enduring impact, our consulting approach focuses on whole-system change—one of VeDA’s strengths. We are particular about defining the life cycle of change: from birth, through growth, to conclusion.
